Pruning Time - Secateur Maintenance

Various Types

With rose pruning getting close, it's probably a great idea to pull out the secateurs and sharpen and lubricate them in readiness. To do the job, it's best to dismantle the secateurs and thoroughly clean the gum from both the blade and anvil.

A small wire brush is ideal although some wet'n'dry works well also. This build up on the blade can be kept at bay by washing after each use in warm soapy water then rubbing a bit of vegetable/cooking oil on the blades.

The blade can quickly be sharpened using an oilstone with a couple of drops of light oil to assist the cutting action of the stone. (Remember to dress the anvil). Most secateurs eg Felco come with detachable blades, which makes this task easier.

Hygiene should be practiced in the garden when pruning and a wipe with an alcohol swab or a dip in a bleach solution should be done between plants.

Hand sharpening blade
Once you've used them for a while, a touch up sharpen with a small hand stone is all that's needed. A small stone soaking in a little linseed oil & turps is handy for these touch ups.

Don't forget your pruning saw and if it needs sharpening, think about either sending it to the saw doctor or replacing it.

Now for a good comfortable pair of gloves, remember that thick gloves will restrict your movement with the secateurs. Riggers gloves make good gloves for pruning roses.

**Felco actually make a secateur with a holding clamp, which holds the pruning in the jaws which allow you to place pruning in barrow without being spiked by thorns. See Felco Classic - 100 model.

Secateurs

I was recently devastated to learn that the business that manufactured "Rolcut" secateurs has gone out of business. I have been using the same pair of Rolcut secateurs since 1970.

About 10 years ago, through Vadoulis Garden Centre in Gawler SA, I sought a new spring. When it arrived it bore a message that the spring was free as the rep was staggered that I had been using the snips for 27 years.

When I tried recently to obtain a new brass anvil, it was then that I discovered that they were out of business.

I consider the Rolcut to be the best secateurs I have used in the 74 years of my life. I guess that I will just have to manufacture my own new anvil!!

Secateurs

Hello Dinosaur - It is very interesting to read your story on your pair of "Rolcut" secateurs, along with the length of time you have been using them.

Could I ask if you would be prepared to post a photo of them along with your story, to "The Green Gardener' section in the Ausgarden forum.

I'm sure a lot of viewers to the forum would be most interested in reading it. Thank You.
